The Sea Front

This section of the sea front is relatively recent. The road running along under the trees is named Via Caracciolo, after the Neapolitan admiral of the late 18th century. It runs from Mergellina (where this photo was taken from) along the Villa Comunale ( the public park and once Royal Gardens of the Bourbons).

The red building directly above the trees is the Nunziatella military academy. The road, the breakwater, this entire section of the sea front is the result of the massive building campaign undertaken as part of the urban renewal of Naples in the late 19th and early 20th century. Before that, the sea washed up to about where the tree-line in the photo is.
