I was raised in Fairmount, Indiana -- a small Quaker community about 55
miles northeast of Indianapolis best known as the hometown of the actor
James Dean and "Garfield" cartoonist Jim Davis. I earned my B.S. (1965)
and M.A. (1969) degrees at Ball State University and my J.D. (1973) at Indiana
University Indianapolis School of Law.
My webpage gives you a good clue about what I'm like and what my interests
are. I read a great deal -- about U.S. history and government, current
affairs, criminal justice, and physics, on to thrillers, mysteries, and
more. I am married to a lovely Irish lass from Cork, Mary Sheehan-Stanton.
I am a Quaker and an eternal optimist. Although my wife and I travel
a considerable amount, we generally reside on a Greek island in the Mediterranean
Sea.
Someday I may get around to writing up a formal bio referencing the two
books I've co-authored, the one I edited, and some of the dozen or so scholarly
articles I've had published. One
article, regarding presidential power over the
public purse, was relied upon heavily by the Senate Budget Committee in
its 1995 report on the line-item veto. For now, this will have to
do.
My professional career has been approximately equally divided between
practicing law and being a university professor. Two of the most
challenging and highly publicized cases I had as a criminal defense attorney
were (1) the death penalty case of Larry Hicks, which I've summarized highlights
of HERE,
and (2) the insanity defense case of Anthony G. "Tony" Kiritsis, which
I've summarized highlights of HERE.
Currently, I teach a variety of criminal justice and government courses
for the University of Maryland University College, European Division.
On May 30, 2004, I was bestowed the Stanley J. Drazek Teaching Excellence
Award. Click HERE
for a little info about that.
