How to install NetBeans

by Larry Arnoldy

To install the NetBeans Integrated Development Environment (IDE), first it must be downloaded from the NetBeans web page. It can also be downloaded in a bundle with the Java 2 Standard Edition (J2SE). You should have already installed Java 2. If you have not done so, please install Java 2 first. If you have already downloaded NetBeans, skip ahead to Step 6.

Step 1 - Browse to the NetBeans web page.
Click on the IDE 3.6 Release link.

Step 5 - Respond to the license pages and select a location on your PC for the downloads to be stored.
Accept the license agreement and follow the instructions.A file with a name similar to netbeans-3_6-windows.exe will be downloaded.

Step 6 - Start the install program.
If your download manager offers you to execute the downloaded .exe file, then do so. If not, use a file explorer to navigate to the file that you just downloaded. Execute the file using the standard file explorer command (double click on the file name or use the menu File | Open). Follow the instructions.

One of the dialogs that appears will ask you to confirm which Java version NetBeans should use. If you have already installed Java, then the default will be correct, so simply click the Next button.

Choose Java Version

Continue with the dialog boxes until you have completed installing NetBeans on your PC. If you use the default location for the install on Windows, NetBeans will be installed in the directory C:\Program Files\NetBeans3.6. An icon to start NetBeans will be installed on your desktop.  On Windows start NetBeans with a double mouse click on this icon or use the Start button to navigate to the program name.
