Title: Introduction to Microcomputers: Hardware and Software

 

Dates: 12 /13 February 2000

Times: 0900 – 1730 hrs

 

Prerequisite: NONE

 

Credit: 1 Semester Hour

Description:  The principle purpose of CAPP100A is to introduce you to the terminology and functional parts of a typical microcomputer.  Participants will learn about the Microsoft Windows operating system and have a chance to practice using computer laboratory exercises.

 

This seminar presumes no prior knowledge of, or experience with, computers and is a prerequisite to all other computer studies seminars and courses offered by the University of Maryland University College European Division.

 

Students should bring their textbook, 1 blank 3.5" disk, paper, pen, and a positive attitude to class.

 

Schedule:

Saturday: Chapters 1, 4, 5

Sunday: Chapter 2, 3, 6

 

Objectives: After successfully completing this seminar:

 

1.        Participants should have acquired a general understanding of the related functions of computer hardware and software.

2.       Participants should know how these components interact as a system.

3.       Participants should understand the purpose of an operating system.

4.       Participants should be familiar with the basic utilities common to contemporary systems software.

5.       Participants should have a fun­damental understanding of various microcomputer applications.

  1. Participants should be prepared for further study in computer related courses.

 

 

Final Examination: A self-graded final examination will be given at the end of the seminar.

 

Students must participate in the assigned computer laboratory exercises and submit printouts for credit.

 

Evaluation: Grades for this seminar will be based on: 

 

Lab & written exercises (50 %),

Final Examination (50%).

S= 70% - 100% (Satisfactory)

 

D = 60% - 69% (Marginal)
