project webliography

The readings are tagged according to our special topic areas. This does not mean that they might not be useful for other areas, but rather indicates their probable usefulness with regard to our project. You may also search the UMUC databases for additional articles, as described at the end of the suggested reading list. However, please remember that all articles must be made available to me and all class members, and also that they must be approved by me prior to use in the project.

Finding Additional Articles in the UMUC Databases:

In the list of readings above, you'll find selected pre-screened articles from our UMUC database collections. If you do not find an article you like in the list of suggested readings, you may select an alternative reading form our databases and, pending my final approval, use this for the first assignment of the project. For those of you who'd like to research our databases, I've provided a sample search below. You can access these library databases directly from the WebTycho classroom.

To get to the Contemporary Women's Issues database, where I found the two sample articles listed below, do the following.

  1. Choose Library Databases from the Library Menu at the top of the WT screen.
  2. When the UMUC Database/E-Journal screen appears, you will see an alphabet list under the heading "Resources by Title."
  3. Choose "C"
  4. When the list of databases beginning with "C" comes up, choose "Contemporary Women's Issues."
  5. At this point, you will be asked to log-in. If you have been currently taking DE courses with UMUC, you should be able to log-in, using your last name and SSN. (If your log-in fails, you will get an "Invalid Authorization" screen, on which you will find links to UMUC-Stateside, UMUC-Asia, or UMUC-Europe library registration forms. Just go to the appropriate form (depending on where you're registered), fill it out, and SUBMIT. You should be registered within 2 working days.)
  6. After log-in, you will get a Search Screen. When this comes up, enter the keyword search criteria "gender communication."
  7. You should get a "Search Results" screen with over 400 hits!

You may search this or other UMUC databases for relevant articles (WilsonSelectPlus is another good database for finding full-text articles!). However, you must have these articles approved before using them. My reasoning is this: The articles used in the project must not only be interesting or academically useful, they must also fit into our special topics areas of Gender and Media, Gender and Education, Gender and Computer-Mediated Education, Gender and Advertising or Gender Stereotypes. Since the group projects work out much better if there is a significant connection between the articles, I'll want to make sure that this connection exists. Don't let this discourage you from looking. I look very hard for possible connections.

Some tips on searching the databases...

Here are two of the articles I found when I searched the Contemporary Women's Issues site using the search criteria "gender communication", then refined (there's a "Refine" button on the left-hand menu, where you can add terms and thus narrow down your search) by adding the terms "university education" to the original search criteria:

Title: Out-of-class communication between female and male students and faculty: the relationship to student perceptions of instructor immediacy.
Database: Contemporary Women's Issues
Author(s): Jaasma, Marjorie A; Koper, Randall J.
From: Women's Studies in Communication v25, n1, 2002, p.119(19) Table
Publisher: United States 2002
Description: Discusses the diversity of reaction to out-of-class communication between students and faculty, based on gender. General communication preferences are reviewed and then connected to classroom/learning behavior and the perception of "instructor immediacy."

When I used the terms "gender communication" and added "advertising" I found the following:

Title: Young women's perceptions of print cigarette advertising
From: Women's Studies in Communication, v24, n2, 2001
Description: Focuses on basis for attraction to ads

Title: Gender Issues in Advertising Language
Author: Artz, Nancy and others...
From: Women &  Language
Publisher: United States 1999
Description: Examines sexism and gender bias in advertising...

When I used the terms "gender communication" and "film" I found the following:

Title: Framing the feminine: diasporic readings of gender in popular Indian cinema.
Database: Contemporary Women's Issues
Author(s): Ram, Anjali
From: Women's Studies in Communication v25, n1, 2002, p.25(28)
Description: Focuses on reception study in terms of media. Author is not studying the message sent by Indian movies as much as the message received. Since many early media studies have focused on influence of media in terms of message sent, this is a relatively new take on media "effects."

Feel free to look in these databases, but make sure that you refine your search criteria further, if you find yourself getting too many hits. Also notice how the hit priorities are managed. By relevance? By date? By both? Probably your best hits will be at the beginning, but not always, depending on how effective your criteria were! Be patient.
