Important info on use of resources in Paper 3...

How much research you have to do for Paper 3 is going to depend on your topic, your own general knowledge in the area of your approach and also your pre-existing critical skills.

Someone experienced in formal analysis, for example, could write most of the papers in the formal perspective areas with little or no research. You can back up many deep-level formal statements with quotes or other reference to the work under study and your own reasoning.

On the other hand, you may need to refer to one of the readings that have been introduced in the Phase 2 Activities or find other articles that help you support your critical conclusions. If, for example, you are analyzing one of these works from the historical perspective, you may need to do some research on the period in which the action takes place or in which the work was written. Although advanced history students may know quite a bit of historical background, they may need to check or confirm facts, thus creating the need to cite sources.

Here are the ground rules for Paper 3:

1) ALL research resources used for Paper 3 must be presented in the Paper 3 Workshop/Bibliography & Citation conference area.

2) ALL research resources used for Paper 3 must be web-based and available to me and to the class...this means UMUC Databases or publicly accessible websites ONLY. No hardcopy resources or information from databases that require paid membership or reading/download fees.

3) All assertions and conclusions must be backed up by textual evidence, critical analysis (your reasoning) and/or other sources as appropriate and necessary.

Failure to follow any of these ground rules will result in a significant drop in grade.

With that said, let's go on to work on getting your bibliographies in shape!
