About Dr. Braem

Born on December 8th, 1944 in Ghent (Belgium) as the second son of the Civil Servant Jules François Braem and his wife Simone. Married with Gudrun, née Schluckebier. (Mrs. Braem is elementary school teacher and vice-principal of the Pestalozzi Elementary School in Lahnau-Waldgirmes)

1950 - 1960 Primary and secondary education in Ledeberg, Balegem and Sint Niklaas (all Belgium)

1960 - 1963 C.E.R.I.A. /Anderlecht (Belgium), technical school for Clinical Chemistry and Clinical Microbiology, Phytochemistry, Pharmaceutical Technology and Biology. Diploma.

1964 - 1968 Technical research assistant at the Ontario Cancer Institute, Princess Margaret Hospital, Toronto (Canada). Fundamental Research on tumor viruses (Polyoma and Papilloma).

1969 - 1970 Technical Research Assistant with the Company R.I.T./Genval (Belgium). Research, development and production of vaccines of Myxo- and Paramyxoviruses.

1970 - 1975 Sales representative and Product Manager for laboratory and diagnostic products in the German Federal Republic. [West Germany]

1976 - 1981 Justus Liebig University/Giessen (German Federal Republic [West Germany])

Biology and English studies. Examination thesis: Populationsökologische Untersuchungen über die Oncidien der Sektion Oncidium auf Jamaica. State Diploma for teaching Biology and English at secondary schools.

1982 - 1986 Doctorate at the department of Plant Biology of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne/England.

Thesis: The taxonomy of plants formerly referred to Oncidium Section Oncidium (Orchidaceae) in the Caribbean Islands. The thesis included work on general morphology, cytogenetics, biochemistry, ecology, population ecology, electron microscopy and numerical taxonomy. A number of research trips to the American tropics were part of the study.

Further research trips were made to Africa (Tanzania), Asia (Indonesia, The Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Hong-Kong), North (USA, Mexico), Central (Costa Rica) and South America (Peru, Ecuador, Brazil).

1987 - Director of the Schlechter Institute, Lahnau, Germany
registered as bona fide Research Institute by the Authorities of the State of Hessen (Germany) under X307.

1987 - 1994 Adjunct Lecturer for the European Divisions of City Colleges of Chicago and University of Maryland, teaching Biology, Environmental Science and Physical Science.

1987 - 1994 Editor and Publisher of the Orchid journal Schlechteriana

1993 - 1995 Editor and translator for Naturalia Publications, Turriers, France

1994 - Editor and Publisher of the Leaflets of the Schlechter Institute.
