Transforming the Bottom Line by Tony Hope and Jeremy Hope. Harvard Business School Press/Nicholas Brealey Publishing, 232 pages, $27.50.
Traditional accounting methods determine costs based on head-counts and allocation. Activity-based accounting methods are more accurate since they examine the actual cost-creating activities. The Hopes offer a new "horizontal" accounting and information system that goes even further. Their horizontal information system manages costs by analyzing according to whether they add value to the customer and they are non-value adding. The result is a system that allows companies to continue offering the same level of value to the customer while reducing costs. Not just for accountants, this book will be of value to any manager facing cost-reduction pressures. Best Business Books, 1996
Relevance Regained by H Thomas Johnson
This much-admired book is a critique of the top-down hierarchical accounting systems. Johnson shows exactly how "managing by remote control" through results-oriented accounting information obscures and obstructs the real business objective. The author then shows how to "regain relevance". A "must" for all accountants and financial managers! 228pp 1992

The author quotes the thinking of top CEOs to prove that today's financial assessments aren't giving a true picture of a firm's condition. He goes on to explain how to recognize these faulty systems and offers ways that will give a truer picture more quickly. Best Business Books, 1997
