Statistical Method from the Viewpoint of Quality Control by Walter A Shewhart
A lot of Deming's teaching, particularly the Theory of Know-ledge section of his System of Profound Knowledge, had roots in this remarkable book. Examples are: emphasis on rational prediction, operational definitions, the necessity for non-numerical information as well as numerical data and "no true value". Statisticians should be aware that, as early as page 12 in this book, Shewhart rejects basing either the theory or the practice of statistical process control on the normal distribution. 155pp 1939
