Skill Reinforcement Exercise

BMGT 364 - Management & Organization Theory

Robbins and Coulter have excellent skill-building modules at the end of their Management text, pages SM-1 to SM-42. The final section of each module has one or more skill reinforcement exercises. I want you to select two of the 23 skill modules and conduct a reinforcement exercise for each. You will then present each exercise and its results in a formal written report (formatted email attachment, please).

There are exercises proposed in the text. You may use one of those or construct your own.

I want you to review the skill modules early in the course and select two skill areas that you know you need to work on. Review the proposed skill reinforcement exercises in the text. Decide to use one of those exercises as written or build one more appropriate for your own circumstances.

Proposal:

Justify the selection of the two skill modules chosen given a personal SWOT analysis (Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) of your current situation.

Briefly assess your own strengths and weaknesses in management and the opportunities and threats (constraints) in your current situation that might help or hinder your improving your skill.

Select two skill modules for which you know you need to improve and where such improvement will have a significant impact on your value as a manager.

Examine the proposed skill reinforcement exercises. Select one exercise for each module. Explain why you think the exercise will provide you meaningful skill development practice and how you intend to implement the exercise.

If the exercises described in the text seems inappropriate for your circumstances, develop a reinforcement exercise of your own, describe and justify its use as an alternative to those described in the text.

Submit the proposal as a formatted, written proposal in an email attachment direct to me.

You must gain approval for your proposal before moving forward to the execution phase. You also need to complete the skill module itself before conducting the reinforcement exercise.

Take good notes as you conduct the reinforcement exercise. Consider the lessons learned in the skill module itself. Also consider your prior managerial conduct in similar circumstances (if appropriate).

Report:

Write up your findings and conclusions. Referring to your proposal, describe the actual conduct of the reinforcement exercise in some detail. Wherever possible relate the experience to course concepts. Include a discussion of lessons learned and how you would revise the exercise were you to conduct it again. Remember to include as assessment of how well the exercise helped you improve the specific skill discussed in the module.

Follow an approved technical writing style manual and format.

See the BMGT-364 Schedule and Assignment sheet for due dates for these three submissions.
