Systems Thinking & Practice

Presented to a meeting of the Eastern Region of the British Deming Association, Tuesday, 17 November 1998 at Marshalls Mono, Sandy, Bedfordshire, England.

Linked to this page are the briefing overhead (vu-foil) slides I used to support my talk.

This talk is drawn together from Alan Waring's Practical Systems Thinking; the block texts for The Open University course T245, Managing in Organizations, which I taught; the University of Maryland course TMGT 411, Systems Performance which I teach; my knowledge of Quality Management techniques; and Dr. W. Edwards Deming's System of Profound Knowledge (SoPK).

One of the four pillars of SoPK is "Appreciation for a System" while another is "Theory of Knowledge". This talk supports both strands of our exploration of SoPK by reinforcing the theory behind systems thinking while providing some examples based our group's visit to Dutton Engineering (Woodside) Ltd in September 1998 and two works by Mr. Ken Lewis, the Managing Director (see How to Transform Your Company ...).
