1948 Elections

Truman - 1948

Thus, many things combined to convince me that I had to make a fight for it - the threat being posed by Russian imperialist Communism; the misguided clamor for appeasement in the name of peace as advocated by the so-called Wallace Progressives; the large bloc of traditional Republican isolationists; and the coalition of southern Democrates and northern Republicans who hoped to compel the repeal of a great deal of New Deal legislation and a return to the lassiez-faire doctrine of pre-depression day. These forces had to be defeated or our country would be thrown back to the hard times of reaction. Truman. Source: Why He Ran in '48
